Depending on funding availability in any given year, the WCS Graduate Scholarship Program (GSP) offers the following awards:

Christensen Conservation Leaders Scholarship – for applicants from Asia/Pacific, Africa, Latin America, and North American indigenous groups
C.V. Starr Tiger Conservation Fellowship – for applicants from a tiger range country in Asia working on tiger conservation and/or who will study tigers
Robertson Big Cat Conservation Fellowship – for applicants from a big cat range country in Asia, Africa or Latin America, or from a North American indigenous group, working on big cat conservation and/or who will study big cats
Beinecke African Conservation Scholarship – for applicants from Africa
Clive Marsh Conservation Scholarships – for applicants from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam
Tellus Leadership Scholarships – for applicants from Africa

Funding and Other Support
Following the award of a scholarship, WCS initially assists each scholar in identifying appropriate institutions of study. Both the scholar’s nominator (or another designated WCS field person) and WCS NY program staff will provide advice and guidance to the scholar.

A WCS GSP scholarship covers the following (funding limits apply within certain categories):

Graduate school application fees
Preparation and sitting fees for exams such as the GRE and TOEFL
Visa processing fees
English language training as needed
One round-trip airfare
A textbook allowance
Laptop computer and printer
Settling-in allowance
Health insurance, as required
$30,000–$36,000, depending on the scholarship received, towards tuition, room, board and a stipend (GSP staff negotiate the exact arrangement, which is dependent upon the institution the scholar chooses to attend. Depending on the choice of university, a WCS scholar may need to secure additional funding in order to cover all their financial needs.)

Nominations and Eligibility

Only nominated applicants will be considered. No unsolicited applications are reviewed or acknowledged.

WCS country program directors, or other agreed and designated nominators, may nominate two applicants per year, per country using the nomination guidelines provided separately. WCS staff should coordinate with their NY Regional Program Director and/or Assistant Director(s) in selecting their nominees.

Nominees must be a citizen of the country from which they are nominated.
Affiliation of the nominee with WCS is not required; it is the responsibility of WCS field staff to identify and nominate the best candidates, regardless of the candidates’ organizational affiliation.
Nominees do not need to have been accepted in any graduate program in order to be eligible, but should plan to begin studies no later than the fall of the year following their award. We do not fund scholars who have already begun their graduate program.

Completed nominations/applications should be submitted electronically to kmastro@wcs.org unless prior permission for alternate submission is granted. Individuals seeking information on application deadlines in any given year should also write to the above contact. Each applicant will be considered for every award for which s/he is eligible; a single application to the WCS Graduate Scholarship Program is all that is required.

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at an UK institution in any field of study.

To be eligible for a 2013 Marshall Scholarship, candidates must:
  • be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they apply for a scholarship);
  • (by the time they take up their scholarship i.e. September 2013) hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States;
  • have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 (or A-) on their undergraduate degree. (Exceptions will be considered only on the specific recommendation of the sponsoring college.)
  • have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2010.
  • not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British University.
To be eligible for the NIH Marshall Scholarship, applicants must first be selected as Marshall Scholars, applying in the usual way.
The Marshall Commission will pay for the first two years of the Scholarship and the Scholar will spend this time in the UK, and the NIH will pay for the third and fourth years and will give the Scholar the opportunity to research at NIH in Bethesda. Chosen Scholars will receive joint supervision from their British University and the NIH and will ultimately receive a doctoral degree from the British Institution.
Any Marshall Scholar who is selected for research in a Bio-medical/Science field can be put forward to the NIH for consideration
 To be eligible for the EPA Marshall Scholarship, applicants must first be selected as Marshall Scholars, applying in the usual way, and must be pursuing a graduate degree in one of the following areas:
 Physical, life or systematic sciences
  • Engineering and technology
  • Economics
  • Social and behavioral sciences
  • Urban and regional planning
  • Communication science
The proposed program of study must be demonstrably relevant to environmental protection, restoration or stewardship; environmental public health; or ecosystem health. Applicants whose work emphasizes the study of global environmental problems, international collaborative approaches to environmental problem solving, technology exchange programs or research to improve international dialog regarding the environment will be given first consideration.
